Villa Maria is uniquely situated on a cliff-top overlooking the village, small fishing harbour and crescent shaped sandy beach of Almyrida. With its unique elevated position, panoramic views of the sea and surrounding countryside of undulating olive covered hills can be enjoyed from the large verandah, pool and mature garden. A small pathway leads down to the beach below, and then in only 4 minutes by foot, to the excellent shops and tavernas in the village. Surrounded by olive groves at the end of a dirt track, no other house overlooks this private villa. Spacious interiors open out onto the covered verandah and pool terrace which are furnished with a dining table, chairs and sun-beds. A further eating out area with two long marble topped tables and cushioned benches is delightfully enveloped in stunning fuchsia bougainvillea in the Summer and Autumn, and surrounded by flowerbeds that are filled with roses, hibiscus and a mature lemon tree. The beautiful private garden has a grassed area with a central circular patio paved with flagstones and bordered by hibiscus, pomegranate and quince trees. This area is ideal for young children to play safely, or for quietly reading a book on one of the sun-beds whilst taking in the magnificent views and observing the boats and activities in the village below. A separate barbeque area is covered by a tiled pergola and the gated driveway and private parking area is lined with flowering oleanders, dates palms and fig trees. Villa Maria is an olderand more rustic property with traditionally styled interiors with simple Cretan cottage style pine furnishings, matching kitchen cabinets, breakfast bar and timbered ceilings, all of which combine to create a comfortable home. The villa is light and airy with a large picture window in the living room to capture the views. Villa Maria is an immensely popular villa with many repeat guests, and is the first villa that I ever worked with here on Crete. Over the years modern appliances have been added and now include satellite TV, a DVD player, a very large kitchen inventory, a washing machine, a microwave oven, a new large corner bath in the en-suite bathroom, and air-conditioning. For those cooler nights at the start and end of the season there is a fireplace and the A/C units double up as heaters. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater. We highly recommend Villa Maria to those looking for a an older and more traditional island villa with privacy, a fantastic position above the sea and fabulous views whilst being conveniently close to the amenities in Almyrida. Accommodation. Ground floor (8 steps from the driveway and parking, 1 step from the 2nd double bedroom into the en-suite bathroom): 1 open-plan living/dining/kitchen area, 2 double bedrooms (1 with en-suite bathroom), 1 twin bedroom, 1 shower room, 1 hall. The spacious main room has the kitchen at the one end, the dining area in the middle, and the living room with a large picture window with a white blind, and fireplace at the other end. The kitchen has many pine cabinets, a high breakfast bar with stools, a further wall of floor to ceiling cupboards filled with the extensive kitchen inventory, a cooker, a fridge/freezer, a microwave, an electric kettle, a toaster, and a coffee maker. The kitchen window looks out to, and the main door opens out onto the rear pergola covered patio and the tree lined driveway. The dining area has a dining area and chairs for 6, and a door that leads out onto the bougainvillea covered outside dining area. The living area is furnished with contemporary gold colour sofas, a TV table with a marble top which holds the TV and DVD player, a coffee table, a side table and white curtains. There is a window that looks out to roses and hibiscus, and double doors that open out onto the covered verandah and pool terrace which are furnished with sun-beds, an ornate white painted metal dining table with a glass top, and matching white metal chairs with cushions. Leading off from the dining area, is a hallway which in turn leads to the 3 bedrooms and the main shower room. The first double bedroom has a double bed, a chair, a traditional wall hanging, a double wardrobe with drawers, shelves and hanging space, a fan, white curtains, and double doors that open out onto the covered front terrace and pool terrace. It is delightful to lie in bed whilst looking out to the view. The twin bedroom has an a/c unit, 2 single beds, a bedside cabinet with reading lamp, a dressing table and mirror, a chair, a double wardrobe with drawers, shelves and hanging space, and white curtains. The twin bedroom has a window which looks out to the garden and double doors that open out onto the covered front terrace and pool terrace. The main shower room has blue and white tiles and a blue porcelain suite comprising a shower stall, a toilet, and a sink with a mirror and shelf. The shower room houses the washing machine and has a frosted window. The second double bedroom has an a/c unit, a double bed, 2 bedside cabinets with reading lamps, a dressing table and mirror, a double wardrobe with drawers, shelves and hanging space, white curtains, and a double window which opens out onto the main garden area. 1 step up from the 2nd double bedroom is the large en-suite bathroom. This bathroom was recently modernised and has blue and white tiles, a large corner bath with shower attachment, an ornate white iron chair, a toilet, a sink with a mirror, and a frosted window. LocationThe heart of the village of Almyrida is only 280m from Villa Maria, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and the Villas Crete Holidays Toursist Office that is owned and run by Frankie Miles. A few minutes by car from Villa Maria, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car. Villa amenities

F.A.QAny steps? How many? 8 steps from the parking area, 7 steps from the villa and pool terrace to the lower grassed terrace. The villa, main garden and pool terrace are all on the same level making it suitable for the elderly or less-abled. How private? Very private. Nearest neighbour? One villa to the side of the property whose owners live in South Africa and have only visited once, for 2 weeks, in the last 7 years. Almyrida beach and facilities are within easy walking distance, and there is a limited bus service into Chania, but we recommend car hire in order to explore the varied regions of the area. |
