1 double bedroom, 1 triple bedroom Private swimming pool (6 x 3 meters) We are very proud to be the exclusive agents in 2010 for Atlantis House, an absolutely charming traditional stone village house which has been renovated with great care to produce a beautiful holiday home. Many original features have been kept including stone arches, high vaulted ceilings made from local cypress wood, nooks built into the walls, and inset doors and windows surrounded by stone. The private courtyard is shaded by a pergola that is covered in vines, which are resplendent with grapes in the summer. The pool terrace is paved with a creamy coloured local stone, has wonderful views to The White Mountains and the olive covered valley, and is fully equipped with outdoor furniture (as are the courtyard and upstairs terrace) including a BBQ, a dining table and director’s chairs, sun-beds and umbrellas. On a hot summer’s day more shade is available under the grapevine covered pergola, the mature mulberry tree or the lemon tree, which is also useful for that slice of lemon for your gin and tonic! Dotted around the pool terrace and the courtyard are a number of raised flowerbeds and traditional terracotta pots that have been planted with different flowers and shrubs such as oleanders, cacti, geraniums, bougainvillea, gardenia and 4 sweet smelling jasmine bushes whose fragrance fills the air during our warm Cretan evenings. Located on one of Plaka’s quaint narrow backstreets, Atlantis House is surprisingly private, despite being only three minutes walk from the 3 well stocked general stores and excellent tavernas on the pretty village square, and 15 minutes walk from the sandy beaches in Almyrida. Surrounded by a stone wall which has mulberry trees planted along it on the street side, and with a high blue/green wooden gate and fencing, you can relax in your own little world. The master bedroom has lovely views to the sea and beach in Almyrida as well as all along the Souda Bay coastline, and the upstairs terrace has views across the old village houses to the sea and the Akrotiri Peninsula. Atlantis House has all of the romantic old world charm that you would expect from such a property but also many modern facilities that you would not, including; a fully fitted, well equipped kitchen, a washing machine and tumble drier, a large fully tiled corner bath that is big enough for two, satellite TV, a DVD player, a stereo with a CD player, Mediterranean Blue aluminium doors and window frames, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms. A/C is not necessary in the downstairs living area thanks to the thick stone walls which keep it cool. For the cooler nights at the start and end of the season there is a wood burning stove in the living room and the a/c units also double up as heaters. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater. The wooden furniture throughout the house has been made locally, as was the pretty wrought iron double bed in the triple bedroom, whilst the king size bed in the master bedroom came from the U.K. The bed-settees in the living room provide sleeping for an additional 2 persons if required. Colourful rugs, curtains, paintings, ornaments and candleholders all add to the extremely attractive interior. The owners have thoughtfully supplied an ample stock of videos, DVD’s and books, as well as a Scrabble board game for your enjoyment. Accommodation. Ground floor (1 small ramp and half a step from the private parking area, 2 small steps up from the living area to the bathroom): Large open plan living room, kitchen and dining area, the bathroom, and a semi-covered courtyard. There are 2 wooden sofa beds with pale yellow fabric, a coffee table, a unit for the large surround-sound TV, the VCR and the DVD player, a table lamp and a standard lamp, a wood burning stove, fireplace utensils, a clock, 3 wall mounted hurricane lamps, and numerous candlesticks. There is a window next to the wooden staircase which looks out to the courtyard and has white curtains. A step leads up to a back door which is screened by an off white linen curtain. A large stone archway leads through to the kitchen and dining area, which can be also be screened by a curtain. The modern kitchen/dining area is fully equipped and includes pine and glass cupboards, a built-in wine rack, beige marble effect worktops, a gas hob and oven, a large fridge/freezer, a microwave, and a window which looks to the side yard area of the next door house. The dining area has a wooden dining table and chairs which seat 8, a hifi system with CD player, a large, elegant wall mirror with a dark wood frame, 2 wall mounted glass hurricane lamps and a table lamp. The far end of the living room has 2 small steps which lead up to the bathroom door. The bathroom is particularly spacious and packed with wonderful features including traditional brass fixtures and fittings. The washbasin is made from stone and is cradled in a black wrought iron bracket, above which there is a mirror with a matching wrought iron frame that is shaped like the sun. Also in the bathroom is a fully tiled corner bath which has a shower attachment, a toilet with a wooden seat, a washing machine, a tumble drier, a second wall mirror, a wooden shelving unit and a wooden cabinet. There is a door which opens out onto the courtyard and a small window made from frosted glass bricks. First floor (18 steps up from the ground floor): 1 double bedroom with a king size bed, 1 triple bedroom, a long hallway, 1 open terrace with sea and village views. At the top of the stairs there is a door which leads out onto the upstairs terrace. This terrace has white and terracotta tiles, a table and chairs, 2 terracotta pots planted with vines, and views across the village rooftops to the sea in the distance. A long hallway has a side table, 2 wall mounted hurricane lamps, and an inset window with a stone surround which looks out at the next door house and a vine covered pergola. The 2 bedrooms are both very spacious and have wooden floors and very high cypress wood vaulted ceilings. The triple bedroom has a romantic wrought iron double bed and a metal and a wood framed extra wide single bed, a chest of drawers, a bedside cabinet with a reading lamp, 2 wall mounted hurricane lamps, a built-in inset bookcase with a stone surround, dark wood wardrobes with hanging and drawer space, a free-standing mirror, and cream curtains. The inset south facing window has a stone arch around it and looks out to courtyard, the vine covered pergola and a large mulberry tree. The double bedroom at the end of the hall has a king size bed, a chest of drawers, a bedside cabinet with a reading lamp, 2 wall mounted hurricane lamps, dark wood wardrobes with hanging and drawer space, and off white tie-back curtains. The 2 inset west and north facing windows have stone arches around them and gorgeous views past village houses to Souda Bay and its coastline, and the White Mountains. LocationThe main square in Plaka is only 175m from Atlantis House and is still very much the focal point of village life. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square. The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include 3 excellent tavernas, 3 well stocked mini markets, a sweet shop, and 5 cafes. The lovely village of Almyrida is only 900m from Atlantis House and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, an off-license and the Villas Crete Holidays tourist office which is owned and run by Frankie Miles. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. A few minutes by car from the house, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car. Villa amenities
