1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom. Sleeps a maximum of 6 person Opportunities to stay in a private, stylish and romantic apartment in the beautiful Venetian port area of Chania are very rare. As its name suggests, the Vista Del Porto apartment has a unique waterfront position in the heart of Chania which commands theatrical views over the old harbour. The current owner has carefully restored one of the traditional 17th Century stone buildings that line the quayside, in order to preserve the original Venetian character whilst adding many modern comforts to create an attractive, high quality home away from home for all seasons. The history of Chania is particularly interesting as the attention of Crete’s conquerors has always been focused here and their influences can still be seen. Today Chania is an incredibly beautiful and lively town with a good atmosphere. In the narrow streets behind the harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, museums, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. The many cafes and tavernas scattered around the harbour and in the quaint back alleys offer an excellent choice of delicious food from freshly caught fish in traditional Greek tavernas to Italian, French and Chinese, in a variety of delightful settings, from bougainvillea and ivy covered open air ruins of buildings, to the former Turkish bath house, and a taverna perched on the harbour wall. In amongst all of the wonderful sites and amenities that Chania has to offer is the jasmine lined entrance to the Vista Del Porto. Hidden away on one of the back alleys the apartment is just one street away from the waterfront, 6 minutes flat walk from the free parking area at the west side of the port, just over 10 minutes walk to Nea Hora marina and sandy beach, and 15 minutes walk to the town beach. The living room and the master bedroom both have large picture windows with uninterrupted views across the harbour to the Venetian lighthouse and Turkish mosque. This is the perfect vantage point from which to survey the comings and goings of the people and boats below whilst being completely private. In 2009 part of the formerly grand Venetian house that was in a state of disrepair was painstakingly converted into a split level apartment. Only the best materials were used such as cypress wood for the open beamed ceilings, solid oak for the built-in hand-made kitchen cabinets and wardrobes, and polished granite for the kitchen work surfaces, whilst keeping the original stone archway, nook/prayer booth, and doorways which are perfectly accented by the romantic spotlights with dimmer switches that have been installed throughout the apartment. The final result is an impressive apartment with an intimate feel and many modern comforts such as a very well equipped kitchen which includes: a ceramic hob, a built-in oven, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, coffee maker, frappe maker, and toaster; a utility room which houses the washing machine, iron and ironing board; fully travertine marble tiled bathroom and shower room; a TV and a DVD player; hand-made wooden doors; aluminium window frames and shutters; double glazing, and air conditioning. The a/c units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. The Vista del Porto Apartment has been beautifully furnished and is an ideal base if you would like to spend time delving into the history and culture of Chania, relaxing in the privacy of a comfortable home, and enjoying the nightlife and wonderful food that this stunning town has to offer. If you would like to combine a stay in Chania with a week or 2 in a beautiful villa with a pool, we are pleased to be able to offer a wide variety of villas for you to choose from. Accommodation. LocationChania is the capital city in the administrative district of the same name, the second largest city on Crete and an absolutely incomparable mix of ancient architecture and modern amenities. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and wide range of restaurants with different cuisines, there is no better place to relax and watch the world go by. You can take a leisurely horse and carriage ride around the port or spend hours wandering around the charming back alleys and never get bored. The Naval, Folk, Byzantine, Archaeological, and War Museums are fascinating, as are Leather Lane, the cross shaped covered market, the Greek Orthodox cathedral, the Catholic church in a 17th Century Fransican building, and the Etz Hayyim synagogue which is on the World Monuments Fund’s list of 100 endangered monuments. (Not even the Parthenon has achieved this status despite the efforts of many). For history buffs there are artifacts and buildings from different eras from Minoan, Roman, and Byzantine, to Venetian and Turkish. The nightlife in Chania town ranges from a quiet romantic candlelit meal to clubbing into the early hours of the morning. Full details of all of the sites, museums, parking areas, and good tavernas are listed in your free copy of the guide book “Crete on the Road”. A good walking route around the town is also included as the back alleys can be like a maze - though sometimes getting lost can be part of the fun. Chania is also an ideal starting point from which to explore the many and varied sites that Crete has to offer: sparkling clear blue seas, golden beaches, water sports, soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and an abundance of art and craft workshops.
