The hilltop village of Kokkino Horio, with its narrow streets and topsy-turvy houses, was the main village location for the film “Zorba the Greek”. With an elevated position on the rural outskirts of the village, The Bay View Villas enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, to the Akrotiri Penisula where the sun sets beautifully and the lights twinkle at night. This setting is dramatic and peaceful, but also conveniently close to the taverna and well stocked mini market in the village centre, and only a few kilometres from the sandy beach and many amenities in Almyrida.

Set 40m apart on different levels of the hillside, Bay View Villa 1 stands on the upper terrace and Bay View Villa 2 stands on the middle terrace. Clever landscaping, minimal screening, and use of the natural contours of the land provide a good amount of privacy for each villa. An electric gate at the bottom of the plot opens onto a long driveway made of natural flagstones, which leads uphill to the villas, which both have their own private parking area. The entire property is bordered by low Cretan stone walls and flowerbeds planted with leilandai, roses, geraniums, and olive trees. The acres of land surrounding the property is made up of rocky outcrops interspersed with almond trees, olive trees, and an infusion of colourful wild flowers in the spring.

Completed in 2010, the Bay View Villas include every modern convenience to ensure a comfortable stay, including satellite TV, a DVD player, a dishwasher, a washing machine, hairdryer, aluminium windows and shutters, mosquito screens, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms. The a/c units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights early and late season, and there is solar powered hot water or a back-up immersion heater. As with all of our villas, internet access via a USB stick is available for a small fee, though we are sure that you will not want to work once you to this idyllic place.

Special emphasis has been put on the outside areas at Bay View Villas. Bay View Villa 1 has sliding doors that lead out from the modern and comfortably furnished living room and bedrooms to the many terraces which provide for both sun and shade. Bay View 1 has a smaller living room than Bay View 2, but it is ideal for clients who are less able and cannot negotiate steps. Of the two villas, Bay View 1 has the larger and more private outside area, which is equipped with an ample supply of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, umbrellas and sun-loungers. Because the outside dining terrace and the pool terrace are both blessed with spectacular views, we find that most of our guests spend the majority of their time eating and relaxing outside. A large pergola covered communal barbeque area is set just below Bay View 2. It is equipped with a brick barbeque, a traditional oven, a sink, and a wooden table and chairs. A portable barbeque is also available for the use of the guests at Bay View 1.

The friendly owner, Babis, spends most of the year in Athens designing and building swimming pools. It is therefore no surprise that the pools at Bay View Villas are beautifully made and have a unique feature that everyone will love. At one end of the marble edged pools there is a built-in bench situated next to hydro massage jets. This may be most enjoyable at night when romantic couples could experience a relaxing hydro massage whilst sipping a cocktail and looking out over the moonlit bay. A small grassy lawn next to the pool terrace is ideal for younger family members to play whilst their parents relax.

The Bay View Villas can be booked either individually, or together by large groups or families who would like to be near to each other yet value their privacy. For even larger groups, The Bay View Villas can also be booked in conjunction with another villa that we manage, Almyrida Villa and Cottage which is situated 100m to the east, on a terrace below the Bay View Villas.

Location

Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are only 7 minutes walk from The Bay View Villas. The family-run taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, has delicious food, and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and who will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Just 10 minutes walk from the villas is the famous glass blowing workshop. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. The Bay View Villas are just 8 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information and guided tours, a scuba diving office, and a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
