1 double bedroom, 1 triple bedroom. Private swimming pool (40m2 & depths 0.90m – 1.45m) Sleeps a maximum of 7 persons. Villa Miguela is an incredibly charming and romantic, beautifully restored stone country house that is set in its own stunning gardens which provide natural shade and privacy. Villa Miguela is very popular and has repeat guests year after year, and it is easy to see why when you visit this haven of relaxation. The large grassy lawn, just below the 40m2 swimming pool, is perfect for children to play on, whilst the mature olive trees dotted around the pool and lawn area provide shade. Despite this private and green location, Villa Miguela is only 3 minutes by car to the tavernas, shops and long, quiet beach at Tavronitis. This is also a perfect location for birdwatchers as the mouth of the Tavronitis River is only a few minutes from the villa, where a wide variety of different birds can be found. With easy access to the National Highway as well as roads to the west and south coasts, this is a great area from which to explore Crete’s many and varied sites if you can drag yourself away from the villa. It is very rare that we find such an attractive villa that combines both the best of the traditional and modern worlds. Creamy coloured local stone has been used for the property walls, kitchen breakfast bar, and BBQ, and natural terracotta tiles have been used for the downstairs floors. Fragrant cypress wood has been used for the thick beamed downstairs ceilings, the high vaulted upstairs ceilings, the staircase, the doors, windows and shutters, the upstairs flooring, and the outside pergolas. Every conceivable modern convenience has been supplied at Villa Miguela including an electric gate with remote control, satellite TV, DVD and CD players, a ceramic hob and built in oven, a large fridge/freezer, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a BBQ, and air conditioning units in the living room and bedrooms. The a/c units also double up as heaters, and there is a large stone fireplace for the cooler nights early and late season. There is also solar powered hot water or a back-up immersion heater. There is a downstairs cloakroom and an absolutely gorgeous upstairs main bathroom which has a high vaulted cypress wood ceiling, pale pink and peach mosaic tiled wash basin, mirror, and walls, and a large bath with a shower attachment. The furniture throughout the villa has been handcrafted locally and is both practical and romantic. The majority has been made from local wood including the large dining table and chairs. The triple bedroom has a single bed and set of bunk beds, whilst the double bedroom has a lovely wrought iron double bed. Extra sleeping is available for large groups or families on the sumptuous red corner couch in the living room. All of the windows have been elegantly dressed with diaphanous curtains. The outside area has also been fully furnished with ample sun-loungers, umbrellas, a dining table and chairs, a swing set lounger with a shade, and there is an outdoor shower next to the pool. The private garden at Villa Miguela has been designed by a professional landscaper and has many pathways to wander along. As well as the large lawn and many mature olive trees, there are many flowerbeds and planted clay pots to bring colour to the garden. The numerous plants and flowers include: heather, lemon verbena, Washingtonian palms, pomegranate trees, mesembryanthum ground cover, bottle brush plants, ivy, and small conifers. Next to the pool and BBQ, at the east end of the garden, there is a “wall” of tall bamboo, and to the north of the pool there is a tall olive tree and bank that are completely covered with ivy. Just inside the electric gate there is a private parking area with a pergola – perfect for keeping the car cool on a hot summer’s day. Accommodation. Ground floor: Open plan living room, kitchen and dining area, 1 cloakroom. 1 and a half mini steps up from the private gated parking area. To the right of the main entrance is the kitchen which has lovely blue/green cupboards, a stone breakfast bar, Bosch stainless steel appliances including: a ceramic hob and built in oven, a large fridge/ freezer, a microwave oven, and a dishwasher. The kitchen has a door which leads out onto the side pathway, and 1 window which faces the large olive tree covered in ivy, and the small stone store house. Just off the kitchen and entrance hall is the cloakroom which has blue and grey tiles, a washbasin, a mirrored cabinet, a toilet and a frosted window. Opposite the front door (next to the kitchen) is the dining area which has a dining table and 6 chairs, and a bookcase. Leading off from the dining area is the lounge and the open staircase which has large wooden pillars. The lounge is furnished with a large comfortable red corner unit couch which can be used for extra sleeping space if necessary, a bookcase/TV stand with the satellite TV system and DVD player, a coffee table, a chest with a large stereo system that includes a CD player, a fireplace, and cream curtains. There are double doors that open out onto a patio which leads to the lawn, a window which looks out to the pool and the driveway, and a window that looks to an olive grove and a stone wall. First floor (15 steps up from the ground floor living room): a landing, 1 master double bedroom, 1 triple bedroom, (both bedrooms have balconies), and 1 full bathroom. At east end of the landing there (at the top of the stairs) there is the master bedroom. This bedroom is very romantic and has very high vaulted ceilings. There is a wrought iron double bed, 2 bedside cabinets with reading lamps, a chest of drawers with a marble top, a wall mirror, a large wardrobe, and rust coloured diaphanous curtains. There is a window which looks out to the pool and the ivy covered olive tree, and doors which lead out onto a balcony which faces south and overlooks the pool, and the front driveway and garden. The main bathroom is off the middle of the landing and has pink/peach tiles, a tiled full bath with shower attachment, a white toilet, a tiled washbasin with a mirror, a bamboo laundry basket, a shelving unit and cupboard, a washing machine and a frosted window. At the opposite end of the landing from the master bedroom (so as to minimise noise and maximise privacy) is the very spacious triple bedroom that has also has high vaulted ceilings, and is furnished with a set of bunk beds, a single bed, a chest of drawers, a wall mirror, a second chest of drawers with a free standing mirror, a bedside cabinet with reading lamp, cream curtains, and a wardrobe. The triple bedroom has a window which looks out over the lawn and front garden to olive clad hills and a small village in the distance, and there are doors that lead out onto a balcony that overlooks the pool, driveway and front garden. LocationTavronitis is a traditional farming centre which has a small tourist industry in the summer months, and is the junction for roads that lead south, west and east. The long bamboo and conifer lined shingle beach with kantinas, sun beds and umbrellas, never gets very busy and it is even easy to find a quiet spot during the summer. There are many cafes and mini markets, as well as a good selection of relaxed tavernas set by the sea. Villa Miguela is very close to the mouth of the Tavronitis River which is spanned by The Tavronitis Bailey Bridge that was built by the Italians and is well-known for the battle there on 20 May 1941, during the Second World War. Thousands of German paratroopers landed near the bridge and a fierce battle took place for control of the key airfield at nearby Maleme . The old bridge had fallen into disrepair and sections had collapsed, but lately this has been restored, and the bridge is now more pleasantly known as an ideal spot for bird watching, particularly at dawn and at dusk. The following birds have been seen at Tavronitis at various times of the year, but mostly during April and May for migrants: Sardinian Warbler, Little Egret, Cetti Warbler, Yellow Wagtail, Little Ringed Plover, Buzzard, Wheat Ear, Gold Finch, Stonechat, Marsh Harrier (Lammergeier), Barn Owl, Squacco Heron, Grey Heron, Glossy Ibis, Kingfisher, Night Heron, Little Bittern, Snipe, Common, Curlew and Wood Sandpipers, Hobby, Red Footed Falcon, Cory’s Shearwaters and Closer Shags. At Maleme today there is a vaulted grave of the post-Minoan era that was discovered by accident in 1966. With its square shaped chamber, perpendicular walls 4m high, and an irregular roof in the shape of a pyramid, it is unique of its kind. Close by are 4,465 graves in the German Cemetery, (occupying a position on the hill overlooking the old airstrip), mainly of very young men. Their remains were kept in the Monastery of Gonia in Kolymbari until the cemetery was founded in 1973. Kolymbari is just to the west of Tavronitis and is famous for its excellent fish tavernas, as well as the beautiful Gonias Monastery. From here you can access the Rodopou Peninsula which has lovely views and small coves. To the south and west of Tavronitis one can find the lovely town of Paleohora, which has 2 huge beaches, and a promenade which is closed to traffic at night, the 3km long sandy beach at Falassarna, the breathtaking Elafonissi beach which has pink sand and turquoise water, and the town of Kissamos-Kastelli. Kissamos-Kastelli has the largest fishing boat harbour on western Crete , from where you can take daily cruises to the stunning Gramvousa Island and Balos Lagoon. 7km behind Kissamos is the ancient archaeological site of Polyrrinia which has fabulous views and ancient remains from Minoan, Roman and Venetian times. For those seeking a little more action, just a few minutes to east of Tavronitis are the larger villages of Maleme (as previously discussed) and Platanias which have long sandy beaches, watersports, numerous tavernas, cafes, shops, night clubs, and archaeological sites. In addition to all of this, we must not forget the gorgeous Venetian town of Chania which is only 30 minutes away. Villa amenities
