1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom. Private swimming pool (25m2 & depth 1.30m) Maypole Villa is a lovely bungalow which enjoys commanding views of Souda Bay, The Akrotiri Peninsula, Kokkino Horio village, olive groves and the White Mountains. Set on an elevated hillside at the foot of Mount Drapanos, this villa affords comfort, wonderful views, incredible sunsets, value for money, and easy access by foot to the excellent taverna and mini market in the centre of Kokkino Horio village. Despite the convenient location near the village amenities, the villa is set in a large plot of half an acre. The grounds have been left natural in some areas with wild flowers and rocky outcrops, but closer to the villa the garden has been cleverly landscaped with gravelled areas, a grassed area, rockeries, terracotta pots, and natural stone walls. The garden and pool terrace have been beautifully planted with a large variety of colourful plants and trees including hottentot fig creeper, wild almond trees, cacti, oleander, 2 orange trees, 1 lemon tree, borage, Washingtonian palms, osteospernum, olive trees and rosemary. Maypole Villa was built 4 years ago and incorporates both traditional Cretan design with modern comforts. All of the furniture has been made locally using wood which matches the windows, doors, shutters and pergolas, wardrobes and kitchen cabinets, and this gives the villa a very natural and welcoming feel. To ensure a relaxing holiday, the thoughtful English owners have equipped the villa with a TV, DVD and CD players, a cooker, a large fridge/freezer, a microwave, a coffee machine that makes both espresso and cappuccino, a food processor, a full kitchen inventory including place setting for 8, a washing machine, BBQ, a telephone for incoming calls, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms and living room. The a/c units also double up as heaters, and there is a wood-burning stove in the living room for the cooler nights early and late season. There is solar powered hot water or a back-up emersion heater. Even your entertainment needs have been catered for with a selection of books, CD’s, DVD’s, and board games in the living room! This charming villa has a choice of sun or shade with a number of different terraces and balconies. There is a spacious covered front terrace, leading out from the living area, enjoys the wonderful views and is equipped with comfortable armchairs and a table, 2 smaller side balconies leading off the bedrooms (one with a coffee table and chairs), and a large pool terrace. The tiled pool terrace and takes in the panoramic views and has sun-beds, umbrellas, and a hammock, a shower, and a pergola covered outdoor dining area that is equipped with a dining table and chairs. There is a small, quiet access road on 2 sides of the villa, and a few neighbouring villas, but the good sized grounds and natural surroundings make this the perfect place for either families or couples to enjoy a wonderful relaxing holiday with beautiful scenery. LocationKokkino Horio taverna and mini market a short 5 minute walk from Maypole Villa. The family run-taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, and has delicious food and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna (once a month at most), which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and they will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Just 10 minutes walk from Maypole Villa is the famous glass blowing workshop. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner, into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. Maypole Villa is just 8 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes, shops, and the Villas Crete Holidays tourist office that is owned and run by Frankie Miles. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car. Villa amenities
