The fastidious English owner of Villa Kali Zoe spent a very long time searching for the perfect plot of land on which to build a villa, and much to our delight he definitely succeeded. With breathtaking uninterrupted views past a small cove, across Souda Bay in its entirety, sweeping along the coastline past the 17th Century hilltop Turkish fort at Aptera, to the majestic White Mountains in the south, there could not be a more beautiful location. The exceptionally large pool, the main terrace that wraps around the front and side of the villa, and the living area and double bedroom all take in these amazing views, as well as the dramatic sunsets. Kali Zoe means “good life” in Greek, and that would definitely be an understatement for the time that you would spend here on your holiday.

This unique villa was designed with great precision and is a gorgeous combination of charming traditional features and complementary modern comforts. The villa is set on one floor that is 14 steps up from the parking area. Local stone has been used for the fireplace and to surround all of the doors and windows, local cypress wood has been used for the high vaulted open beamed ceilings, the kitchen cabinets, the doors, windows, shutters, and the railings around the terraces, local marble was used for the window ledges and dining and coffee table tops, and the elegant dark wood furniture was handmade at the workshop of a local craftsman. As with the rest of the villa, the bathrooms have been finished to a very high standard with pretty white and pale terracotta tiles. To ensure that you have a relaxing holiday Villa Kali Zoe has been very well equipped with every modern comfort including; satellite TV, a DVD player, a CD player and stereo, a VCR, a washing machine, a dishwasher, a microwave, a BBQ, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms and living area. For those cooler nights at the start and end of the season there is a fireplace and the A/C units double up as heaters. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater, and there are large storage tanks for those times in the summer when the water is limited.

The outside areas at Villa Kali Zoe are not only special because of the stunning views, but also because of the large pool and the beautifully planted colourful garden. The pool terrace is paved with non-slip natural stone and has built-in wood and bamboo umbrellas, as well as sun-beds and a table and chairs. The main terrace is also equipped with a table and chairs. Adjacent to the pool is a large rockery area which has numerous mature plants and trees including; cape honeysuckle, lantana, purple polygala, South African daisies, and many weeping fig trees. There is also a small herb garden which contains rosemary, basil, chilli peppers and a number of other herbs. The front garden has been gravelled and planted with cacti and a number fruit trees including nectarine, peach pomegranate, mulberry and fig. There are 2 fuchsia bougainvilleas growing up the wall of the villa around the kitchen window. Set behind a natural stone wall is a section of the garden that has been left completely natural with olive trees, almond bushes and rocks. The BBQ is in this area and has a wonderful wooden table and chairs carved from a large tree trunk, and set beneath a shady olive tree.

We are absolutely sure that it will be hard to drag yourselves away from this lovely villa, but if you do want to go out for a delicious meal, the Kokkino Horio village taverna and general store are only 700m away, and the beach at Almyrida is only 7 minutes away by car. Kali Zoe has return visitors year after year and it is easy to see why as it is a private romantic retreat with incredible views, that suits not only couples but also small families.

Location

Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are only 700m from Villa Kali Zoe. The family-run taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, has delicious food, and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and who will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Also in Kokkino Horio is the famous glass blowing workshop. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls.

The coastline below Villa Kali Zoe is famous for its sea caves, and it has Koutalas cove, which is a rocky inlet with a small stony/sandy beach. Plaka Square is just 1.6km away and has 3 excellent tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, a sweet shop, and 5 cafes. 7 minutes away by car is the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans and the Villas Crete Holidays Tourism Office owned and run by Frankie Miles. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
