Almyrida, with its pretty, family friendly beach and small fishing harbour, is always high on our list of prime locations, so we are thrilled to have discovered a completely private cottage within walking distance of the excellent seafront tavernas, shops and water sports in this charming village. Grapevine Cottage is an attractive country cottage simply furnished in traditional Cretan style offering privacy and quiet. Tucked away on a small country track only 400m from the sandy beach and many amenities, and surrounded by olive groves with no immediate neighbours, this quaint property offers delightful and affordable accommodation for a couple or a small family.
Grapevine Cottage looks out over the tops of olive trees and village houses to the sparkling blue sea and the Akrotiri Peninsula in the near distance. This home is an ideal base for a relaxing and peaceful holiday by the sea where here is no passing traffic and the tranquillity of this property is only occasionally interrupted by the chatter of the cicadas during the hotter months.
A simple yet comfortable retreat, furnished by the owner to create the character of a traditional island home, Grapevine Cottage is perfectly suited to summer living. Neatly presented bright and airy rooms naturally stay cool and the high vaulted ceilings of the open plan living room/kitchen extend over the 2 bedrooms allowing the cool air from the large air conditioning unit in the lounge to flow to the bedrooms if needed. Decorated and furnished in typically Cretan style, the cottage is more rustic than our luxury modern properties. However, whilst the architecture and style is homely, many modern comforts have been provided including: WIFI internet access (top-up cards for air-time will need to be purchased locally), TV; DVD/CD player; a fully fitted kitchen which features an electric cooker with cooker hood, a microwave, fridge/freezer, a kettle, a toaster, a coffee maker; a washing machine; white aluminium doors, windows and shutters; an iron; a hairdryer; and air conditioning. For the cooler nights at the start and end of the season the a/c unit also doubles up as a heater. There is solar powered hot water or a back-up immersion heater, and a gated private parking area.
The focus of your holiday time will undoubtedly be the garden of low natural stone walls, climbing grapevines, olive trees and terracotta pots of brightly coloured flowers, and the grassy pool terrace which is a total suntrap. The traditional brick built barbeque and the dining terrace are conveniently located just outside the kitchen door. The dining terrace is shaded by a cypress wood pergola and is perfectly positioned overlooking the pool terrace for appetizing dinners under the star-filled night sky or a leisurely al fresco breakfast after a morning dip in the pool. It is also the ideal vantage point from which to supervise the younger family members while they play in the pool or on the lawn. For guests who prefer to doze or read a good book in the shade, the rear of the property has a small lawn which is sheltered from the sun by a framework that is covered in vines that are laden with grapes by the end of the summer.
Keen walkers and nature lovers alike will enjoy following the many quiet country trails with wonderful views that lead from the cottage across low hills and through olive groves to the villages of Gavalohori, Douliana, Tsivaras, and to Kera Cove. For the less energetic amongst you, the only activity necessary is a lazy stroll to enjoy a frozen cocktail or delicious meal at one of the cafes or tavernas on Almyrida’s beachfront.
Grapevine Cottage is a must for those seeking excellent value, and well equipped holiday accommodation in a well appointed, private and undisturbed location within easy walking distance of the sea and major amenities.

The heart of the village of Almyrida is only 400m from Grapevine Cottage, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 5 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a pharmacy, a jewellery shop, an organic fruit and vegetable shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving centre, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, horse riding and guided tours. A few minutes by car from Grapevine Cottage, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 30 minutes away by car.
