Villa Agatha is a pretty bungalow set on the corner plot of a handful of holiday villas that line a cliff top road on the outskirts of Plaka. This elevated position high above Souda Bay affords superb views of the bay in its entirety, the beach resort of Almyrida, The White Mountains, the Akrotiri Peninsula, and last but not least, the glorious sunsets. The villa has been attractively finished with a high level of modern comforts but guests at Villa Agatha tend to spend most of their time relaxing outside on the spacious and well equipped terraces. Conveniently located across from a wonderful cafe/taverna, only 250m from the nearest traditional taverna, and 1.2kms from the beach in Almyrida, Villa Agatha will appeal to those who would like to have a holiday in a quality villa with a private pool and sea views, within walking distance of the many local amenities.

The French owners have carefully furnished the villa whilst combining the traditional Greek colours of blue and white with chocolate brown and splashes of orange. The living room and all 3 bedrooms have double sliding doors that lead out onto the many terraces, ensuring the villa is very light and airy. Charming wicker furniture blends effortlessly with a sumptuous couch, fully tiled spacious bathrooms, and a fully fitted kitchen. All modern comforts have been provided for, including a TV, DVD player, a ceramic hob and built-in oven, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a microwave, aluminium doors, windows, shutters and mosquito screens, and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms and the living room. The a/c units also double up as heaters, and there is a fireplace for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. In consideration of the environment the water is heated by solar panel with a back-up immersion heater. A garage with an electronic door opener is located underneath the villa and is ideal for keeping your car cool on a hot summer’s day.

Villa Agatha is painted a lovely shade of cream and has Wedgewood blue pergolas, windows and doors. There are a number of different terraces for a choice of sun or shade, including a roof/sun terrace which has a pergola, and the main terrace which is equipped with a dining table and chairs and includes a barbeque area with its own mini-kitchen that has natural stone columns and a red tiled roof. The pool terrace is set below the main terrace and the villa. It is fully tiled, equipped with sun-beds and umbrellas, and for safety reasons, it is not accessible by younger members of the family without parental help. A natural stone wall surrounds the villa and has recently been topped with a bamboo screen to ensure privacy from the very few cars that use this road to access the Emerald Cafe/Taverna or the 8 holiday homes on the cul-de-sac behind the villa. The Emerald Cafe across the road is screened from Villa Agatha by a “wall” of fuschia bougainvillea and ivy, to ensure privacy The cafe is owned by the an excellent and the gardens (and large pool area) are therefore lush and very beautiful. Sharing the same wonderful views as Villa Agatha, the café /taverna is a wonderful place for drinks or exquisite fusion food, and you are also welcome to use their gardens and large pool.

The warm summer Cretan evenings are perfect for sitting out on your terrace and watching the ferries going to and from Athens, or the lights twinkling from the Akrotiri Peninsula on the opposite side of Souda Bay, but if you want to have a delicious meal in one of the local tavernas, you can stroll to the Plaka square or take a short drive to the tavernas that line the sandy beach in Almyrida.

Villa Location

Directly opposite Villa Agatha, but hidden by bougainvillea and grape vines, is the excellent Emerald Cafe Taverna which serves exquisite fusion food with flair and has wonderful sea and mountain views. A second taverna with panoramic views over the entire area including Souda Bay, Almyrida and the mountains, and is 250m from Villa Agatha. The main square in Plaka is 600m from the villa, has free WIFI, and is still very much the focal point of village life. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square.

The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include 7 tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, an Italian restaurant, and 7 cafes. The lovely village of Almyrida is only 1.2km from Villa Agatha and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 12 tavernas, 6 cafés, 2 bars, 2 bakeries, 1 Italian ice cream shop, a wonderful jewellery shop, 4 mini-markets, 7 gift shops, a pharmacy, a butchers shop, a fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, an off-license, a hairdressers, a nail spa, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, private boat hire, horse riding, private sightseeing flights, water skiing, big game fishing, and guided walking and coach tours.  Also in Almyrida there is an arcade/cafe with pool tables, a scuba diving centre, a children's activity centre with baby sitting available, pedalo rentals, and a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, and lace makers in Gavalohori. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.
