The hilltop village of Kokkino Horio, with its narrow streets and topsy-turvy houses, was the main village location for the film “Zorba the Greek”. With an elevated position on the rural outskirts of the village, The Bay View Villas enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, to the Akrotiri Penisula where the sun sets beautifully and the lights twinkle at night. This setting is dramatic and peaceful, but also conveniently close to the taverna and well stocked mini market in the village centre, and only a few kilometres from the sandy beach and many amenities in Almyrida.

Set 40m apart on different levels of the hillside, Bay View Villa 1 stands on the upper terrace and Bay View Villa 2 stands on the middle terrace. Clever landscaping, minimal screening, and use of the natural contours of the land provide a good amount of privacy for each villa. An electric gate at the bottom of the plot opens onto a long driveway made of natural flagstones, which leads uphill to the villas, which both have their own private parking area. The entire property is bordered by low Cretan stone walls and flowerbeds planted with leilandai, roses, geraniums, and olive trees. The acres of land surrounding the property is made up of rocky outcrops interspersed with almond trees, olive trees, and an infusion of colourful wild flowers in the spring.

Completed in 2010, the Bay View Villas include every modern convenience to ensure a comfortable stay, including satellite TV, a DVD player, a dishwasher, a washing machine, hair dryer, aluminium windows and shutters, mosquito screens, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms. The a/c units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights early and late season, and there is solar powered hot water or a back-up immersion heater. Though we are sure that you will not want to work once get you to this idyllic place, WIFI internet access is available for up to 5 devices (air-time cards will need to be purchased locally).

Special emphasis has been put on the outside areas at Bay View Villas. Bay View Villa 2 has sliding doors that lead out from the modern and comfortably furnished living room and bedrooms to the surrounding terraces which provide for both sun and shade. Bay View 2 has the larger internal area of the two villas and can accommodate 2 extra persons in the spacious living room if necessary. It is the slightly less private of the 2 villas because the driveway that leads to Villa 1 runs up the east side of the villa. Because the outside dining terrace and the pool terrace are both blessed with spectacular views, we find that most of our guests spend the majority of their time eating and relaxing outside. The front terrace has a teak dining table, matching cushioned chairs, and a relaxing swing seat. A large pergola covered communal barbeque area is set just below the Bay View 2 front terrace and it is equipped with a brick barbeque, a traditional oven, a sink, and a wooden table and chairs.

The villas were built by the owner who specialised in building swimming pools in Athens. It is therefore no surprise that the pools at Bay View Villas are beautifully made and have a unique feature that everyone will love. At one end of the marble edged pools there is a built-in bench situated next to hydro massage jets. This may be most enjoyable at night when romantic couples could experience a relaxing hydro massage whilst sipping a cocktail and looking out over the moonlit bay. The gravel and flagstone sun terrace is situated just above the pool and is equipped with umbrellas and sun-loungers, and planted with immature walnut, lemon, orange and olive trees.

The Bay View Villas can be booked either individually, or together by large groups or families who would like to be near to each other yet value their privacy.

Villa Location

Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are only 7 minutes walk from The Bay View Villas. The family-run taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, has gppd food, during the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and who will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Just 10 minutes walk from the villas is the famous glass blowing workshop with its excellent organic taverna. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. The Retreat Taverna is on the outskirts of the village and has good food and panoramic views. The Bay View Villas are just 8 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, private boat hire, big game fishing, pedalo rentals, horse riding, private sightseeing flights in a light aircraft, and guided walking tours and coach tours, a scuba diving office, a children's play/activity centre with babysitting, and a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
