In an elevated and private position on the wooded hillside skirting the charming village of Gavalohori, Villa Halepi commands panoramic views across the village and olive trees in the valley below to Souda Bay in the north and The White Mountains in the south. Part of Villa Halepi’s charm is the undoubtedly rural location that is within walking distance of the village centre that is not only picturesque and interesting, but also full of local life and character. A 10 minute stroll to the village in the day enables you to stock up on all of the essentials including freshly baked bread, croissants, pies, and locally grown fruit and vegetables, whilst at night you can have a delicious and inexpensive meal under the local mulberry trees on the village square. The walk back to the villa is uphill but after a few glasses of local wine you probably won’t notice at all!

Wonderful sunsets can be seen from the villa, which has been cleverly designed so that all but one of the bedrooms, both of the living rooms, all of the balconies, terraces and the pool area benefit from the gorgeous views. The ground floor of the villa has a separate entrance and is a completely self-contained 2 bedroom apartment that is ideal for guests who are elderly or disabled. Villa Halepi offers excellent flexibility of accommodation and is therefore a superb choice for larger parties, sharing families, or groups of friends who are looking to holiday together while still retaining the option of privacy and independence. Couples and smaller parties have also been taken into consideration with our low season prices which give them the option of renting the main 2 floors of the villa without the ground floor apartment -  which would remain locked. (During mid season and high season the villa is only rented with 4 bedrooms).

Nestled at the end of an unmade country track, behind a natural stone wall and a large gate, Villa Halepi is backed by a forest of pine trees. The ground falls away on 2 sides of Villa Halepi’s grounds, protecting the unspoilt views to the sea and the mountains, and ensuring the privacy of the guests. The enclosed, landscaped grounds are adorned with flowerbeds and typically Mediterranean plants and trees that include geraniums, roses, mesenbryanthum, polygala, margarita daisies, olive, orange and pear trees. Since the photos were taken a lush lawn has been laid on the lower terrace and a children's play area has been created there for the younger members of the family. Creamy coloured local stone has been used for the walls, archways, and crazy paving on the extensive terraces which surround the villa. The pool area has sun-beds and umbrellas, and all of the terraces and balconies are equipped with outdoor furniture.

Recently built in contemporary style, the interior throughout is bright and well equipped with comfortable furnishings and eye-catching fabrics, and is perfectly suited to relaxed summer living. Occupying much of the middle floor of the villa, which is accessed either by a ramp from the large private parking area or via steps from the pool terrace, is a large L-shaped living room and kitchen. Sliding doors open out from the living area to a covered dining terrace, and from the upstairs bedrooms to an open balcony, both of which look out over the entire area to the bay and mountains. All modern comforts have been provided at Villa Halepi, including WIFI internet service, satellite TV’s, DVD players, 2 dishwashers and 2 washing machines, wood effect aluminium doors, windows, and shutters with mosquito screens, and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms and the living rooms. There is a fireplace in the main living room, and the A/C units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. The modern bathroom and shower rooms are all beautifully tiled and the water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater.

Villa Location

Gavalochori is a very traditional village and it has great historical importance in this area. There are buildings still remaining from Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish eras, and artefacts have also been found in the area from Neolithic and Minoan Times. Many of these artefacts are now housed in the Historical and Folklore Museum which is located on one of the village’s narrow streets. On the outskirts of the village there is a lovely picnic area beneath a thicket of shady trees next to some Venetian Wells. The village square is just a 9 minute walk from Villa Halepi and is still very much the focal point of village life. The main kafenion/taverna is a beautifully renovated stone building which is run by the very friendly Monica Papatheofilo. The food and desserts here are delicious and the prices are low. Sitting under the kafenion’s shady mulberry trees and watching the world go by, is a favourite past time for both locals and visitors alike. On the opposite side of the square there is the Women’s Craft Co-operative which is trying to keep traditional handicrafts alive by making and selling products such as pottery and lace. In the village you can also find 3 more tavernas, 1 well stocked mini market, and a bakery. Villa Halepi is just 5 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, a scuba diving centre, a chldren's play centre, a space with pool tables and a variety of games machines, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, private boat hire, waterskiing, big game fishing, horse riding. and guided walking tours and coach excursions. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
