Villa Kalypso is a modern villa that was finished to a high standard at the beginning of 2008. The villa is located on the side of a hill just above the seaside village of Almyrida, which affords it gorgeous views of the sea and the surrounding olive and vine clad hills. Villa Kalypso is set just below the adjacent villa (Villa Ifigenia - which we also book) and has its own grounds, pool, table tennis table, BBQ, and private parking area. The villa belongs to a friendly local family who have a quaint gift shop in Almyrida, and whose sister owns the popular “Thalami” seafood taverna in the village.

The villa has been thoughtfully designed to ensure that all rooms have balconies or terraces that take in the outstanding views. Both floors of the house have huge sea facing terraces where one can sit and watch the ferries going to and from Athens, or the lights twinkling at night from the Akrotiri Peninsula on the opposite side of Souda Bay. The lower terrace is covered, and the upper terrace is open, so that you can choose either sun or shade. The villa is a peach colour with dark green aluminium doors, windows and shutters throughout. The furniture, doors and cupboards throughout the inside of the villa are traditionally Cretan, and made locally from a honey coloured wood. The upstairs rooms have incorporated the lovely high wood beamed ceilings that are also very traditional. All modern comforts have been provided for at Villa Kalypso, including a sumptuous suedette couch, free WIFI internet access, satellite TV, DVD and CD players, dishwasher and washing machine, and air conditioning units in all of the bedrooms and the living room. The A/C units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater.

There are natural stone walls running all around the property, which despite its close proximity to the village feels very rural. Villa Kalypso and its separate pool terrace have olive groves, almond trees, a wild cherry tree, and a vineyard on 3 sides. The raised pool terrace is surrounded by grass and olive trees, as well as a low stone wall and wooden railings to ensure the safety of the younger members of the family, whilst not spoiling the beautiful views. Just below the villa and the pool are the lower garden, the BBQ, and a covered area that houses a table tennis table that is perfect the more active guests. The olive trees in the shady lower garden are perfect for relaxing under with a book on a hot summer’s day, whilst the children enjoy playing on the wooden see-saw and slide.  The large sea facing terraces and the pool area have been well equipped with a large variety of comfortable outdoor furniture including dining tables, a coffee table, director’s chairs, sun-beds and umbrellas. The private, gated parking area has a wonderful flowerbed of sunflowers that are at least 2 metres tall.

You may not feel like leaving this lovely villa, but if you do decide to go to the beach, or have a delicious meal in one of the village’s four exceptional tavernas, you can easily walk downhill to the centre of Almyrida in approximately 8-10 minutes. It is a little harder coming uphill on the second half of the way back, but you will be so relaxed from the wine at dinner that you may not even notice!

Villa Accommodation

Ground floor (8 steps from the pool terrace, 7 steps from the private parking area, 12 steps to the lower garden and covered table tennis area): Open plan living room, kitchen and dining area, 1 twin bedroom, 1 shower room, a large sea facing covered terrace. The living room has double doors that open out onto a large covered, sea facing terrace that is equipped with a dining table and comfortable dark green director’s chairs. From the living room there is also a front door that leads to the pool terrace, lower garden and covered table tennis area, and the private gated parking area. In the living room there is a very comfortable dark orange suedette couch which can convert into a double bed if needed, 2 wooden armchairs, a coffee table, a TV/DVD unit which doubles up as a bookcase, and rust/gold coloured diaphanous curtains. The modern kitchen/dining area is fully equipped and includes a dishwasher, ceramic hob and built in oven, a large fridge/freezer, a microwave oven, and a locally made wooden dining table and chairs which seat 6. All of the appliances are in matching stainless steel. The kitchen window faces south west and looks out over the pool terrace to the olive clad hillside. The kitchen area has a door which leads to a small hall with floor to ceiling built-in wardrobes with drawers and hanging space, and doors that lead to the shower room and the twin bedroom. The shower room has blue and white tiles, a shower, a white washbasin, a mirrored cabinet, a toilet, and a frosted window. The twin bedroom has 2 single beds, 1 bedside table with a pink glass reading lamp, a dressing table, stool and wall mirror, very cheerful bright pink bedspreads, and multi-coloured diaphanous curtains. There is a window which looks out west over the pool to olive groves and vineyards, and there are double doors that open out onto a covered balcony which has also views to the pool and olive clad hillside. The staircase from the living room to the first floor is made from very attractive wrought iron railings and wooden stairs.

First floor (17 steps up from the ground floor): 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom with bunk beds (2 single beds can be placed in this room instead of the bunk beds upon request in advance) , 1 full bathroom and a large open terrace. The twin bedroom has a set of bunk beds, 1 bedside table with a blue glass reading lamp, a built-in wardrobe with drawers and hanging space, lovely pale gold bedspreads, and gold and blue diaphanous curtains. There is an extra wide single door that opens out onto a large terrace which has gorgeous views to the sea, the pool, and the entire area, and is equipped with a coffee table and chairs. As this terrace is not covered, it is also a wonderfully sheltered place to bring the sun-beds. The full bathroom has blue and white tiles and a bathroom suite comprising a full bath with shower attachment, a wash basin, a mirrored cabinet, and a toilet. This main bathroom also houses the washing machine, and has a frosted window. The double bedroom has a double bed, 2 bedside tables with gold glass reading lamps, a dressing table, stool and wall mirror, built-in wardrobes with drawers and hanging space, lovely pale gold bedspreads, and diaphanous rust coloured curtains. The double bedroom has a window that looks out over the pool terrace to the surrounding olive clad hills, and double doors leading to an open balcony with the same views.

Villa Location

The lovely village of Almyrida is only 750m from Villa Kalypso , and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 11 excellent tavernas, 4 cafés, 2 bars, 2 bakeries, a jewellery shop, 4 mini-markets, 7 gift shops, a butcher's shop, an off-license, a pharmacy, an organic fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, 1 Italian ice cream shop, a nail spa, 3 real estate offices, and the Villas Crete Holidays Tourist Office for tourist information, boat trips, private boat rental, waterskiing, big game fishing, horse riding, private sight seeing flights in a light aircraft, and guided walking and coach tours.  Also in Almyrida there is a space with pool tables and games machines, a scuba diving office, pedaloes, paddle boarding, table tennis, a children's activity centre that offers babysitting, and a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans. A few minutes by car from Villa Kalypso , there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, and lace makers in Gavalohori. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.

7 steps from parking area to the villa, 8 steps from the villa to the pool terrace, 12 steps from the villa to the lower garden and covered table tennis area, 17 steps to the upper floor.

How private?

Not very private. The front terraces can over looked by guests standing on the terraces at Villa Ifigenia, but only if they choose to look down and westwards. The pool terrace can be seen 2 houses to the rear, and by a few houses dotted on the hillside over 300m away to the south and west of the villa.

Villa Ifigenia (adjacent) and 2 villas to the rear.

Almyrida village is within walking distance, and there is a limited bus service into Chania , but we recommend car hire in order to explore the varied regions of the area.
