High above the Aegean Sea on a 6000 square meter plot carpeted with wild olive groves and indigenous scrub sits Villa Aurora, a rustically chic bi-level three bedroom/two bathroom stone villa. Blessed with sea and mountain vistas and a serene pastoral setting, this inviting character-imbued custom home has been built using locally sourced natural materials such as fragrant cypress wood and cream coloured stone. The villa is full of charming details– from the glass-inlayed wood front door to beamed ceilings, stone archways, natural stone walls, a wood-burning fireplace, wooden window frames, doors and shutters, and there is also an abundance of outdoor space.
The English owners have carefully furnished the villa whilst combining the traditional Greek colours of blue and white with chocolate brown and splashes of orange. The living room and all 3 bedrooms have double sliding doors that lead out onto the many terraces, ensuring the villa is very light and airy. Charming wicker furniture blends effortlessly with a sumptuous couch, fully tiled spacious bathrooms, and a fully fitted kitchen. All modern comforts have been provided for, including a TV, DVD player, a ceramic hob and built-in oven, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a microwave, aluminium doors, windows, shutters and mosquito screens, and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms and the living room. The a/c units also double up as heaters, and there is a fireplace for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. In consideration of the environment the water is heated by solar panel with a back-up immersion heater. A garage with an electronic door opener is located underneath the villa and is ideal for keeping your car cool on a hot summer’s day.
Earthy but modern, Villa Aurora contains all the conveniences of home, including a fully-equipped kitchen with a pine dining table, “hidden” washer/drier, flat screen TV, satellite TV, DVD player, WIFI internet (top-up cards for air-time will need to be purchased locally), plush beds and bedding, 2 modern fully tiled bathrooms, and comfy furnishings and air conditioning throughout.
The majority of the large plot has been sympathetically left in its natural state so as to blend in perfectly with the surrounding countryside, whilst the land closest to the villa has been beautifully landscaped in traditional Cretan style. Embroidering the entire house is a tiled walkway from which a web of gravel paths connect a series of stone terraces and walled gardens that are screaming with color – from daisies, to Hottentot fig, aloe plants, roses, geraniums, yukka, cacti, and different varieties of Mediterranean foliage including an exquisite bougainvillea. Relaxing sun-loungers, drink tables, and umbrellas flank the inviting 7m x 4.5m swimming pool (which features 3 steps into the shallow end), whilst on the adjacent stone paved dining/barbeque terrace a six-seat teak wood table sits under a large sun umbrella to provide a respite from the sun -- but not the view -- and an inviting spot for alfresco dining and cooking fresh local produce on the barbeque.
What you will find at Villa Aurora, however, that you won’t find at home are views and terrain that are unique to Crete - virgin hillside spanning out at the rear of the villa, mountain tops, and glistening sea unfurling in to the horizon at the front... Paradise? Perhaps. Utter delight. Most certainly.
Ground floor (Half a step from the parking, 2.5 steps to the pool and dining terrace): An open-plan living room/ kitchen/dining area, a utility cupboard, 1 double bedroom, 1 shower room, a sea facing terrace, and a sea facing pool and dining terrace.
Separated only by an imposing stone-arch, the open ground floor-plan has the kitchen flowing into a living room anchored by a stone fireplace and furnished in an artsy mix of comfortable raffia and dark wood accent pieces. Further embellished by warm-hued throw rugs and ambient lighting, this cozy lounge demands relaxation -- perhaps with a good cognac or glass of red wine -- as you peer through the French doors (secured by a second set of shutter doors) that open to a large bi-level patio centered by the pool. The side door from the parking area leads into the kitchen/dining area which has built-in dark wood cabinets, an Inox fridge/freezer, a ceramic hob with an Inox cooker hood, a built-in oven, a microwave, a kettle, a toaster, a juicer, a coffee maker, a full kitchen inventory, a dining table and 4 chairs, a sideboard, a cupboard with a combined washing machine/drier and laundry equipment, and window that looks out over the rear of the property to olive trees and the surrounding countryside. The lounge has a 2 person couch with 2 matching arm chairs, a nest of 3 tables, a TV stand with a Phillips TV, a satellite TV receiver, and a DVD player, 2 lamps, wall lamps, a stone and brick fireplace, a window facing east over the driveway to a natural stone wall and an olive grove, and double French doors to the pool terrace.
Branching off a small hallway on the ground floor, a charming beam-ceilinged air-conditioned bedroom is bedecked with a wooden dresser, bedside cabinets with lamps, and a matching wood-framed queen-size bed. A built in wardrobe provides two large drawers and ample hanging space while French doors lead directly to the pool/patio area. Also off the small hallway, the cream-tiled downstairs bathroom features a shower, toilet, mirrored cabinet over a washbasin, and a frosted window.
First floor (16 steps up from the ground floor): 1 master bedroom with double bed, 1 twin bedroom, 1 full bathroom, and an open sea facing terrace.
A curved staircase, flanked by window-punctuated stone walls, ends on a small landing off which the twin bedroom and Master bedroom are situated. Turn left and you come upon a bedroom similarly sized as the downstairs bedroom, but with two wooden single beds, a matching bedside cabinet, a lamp, a built-in wardrobe with drawers, shelf, and hanging space, a window facing west with sea, countryside, and mountain views, and a window facing north which looks out over the pool terrace to the sea and a few nearby villas. French doors open out to a shared pergola-covered terrace which has sea and countryside views, and on which two chairs and a coffee table beckon. The larger Master Bedroom boasts an atmospheric medieval charm, highlighted by three stone and one white painted wall and underscored by a decorative wood framed double bed. Ethnic flavored bedside cabinets with lamps, a built-in wardrobe, a with countryside views over the rear of the property, and French doors leading to the sea facing shared balcony add to the allure of this delightful room. Across the hall from the master bedroom (and next to the twin bedroom) a full bathroom features a full-size bath with a shower attachment, a mirrored cabinet over a washbasin, a toilet, a frosted window that faces west to the countryside, sea and olive groves, and all the expected accompaniments in a toffee/white tiled color scheme.
The Kokkino Horio taverna and mini market are within walking distance of Villa Aurora. The family-run taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, and good food. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna, which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and who will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Kokkino Horio is home to the famous glass blowing workshop where you can eat at the excellent organic taverna after watching recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. A third taverna is situated on the outskirts of the villa - high on a hillside with fantastic views. The coastline near Villa Aurora is famous for its sea caves and it has Koutalas cove which is a rocky inlet with a small stony/sandy beach that is only a few minutes drive from the villa. Plaka Square is just 3.5km away and has 7 good tavernas, an Italian restaurant, 2 well stocked mini markets, and 6 cafes. 10 minutes away by car is the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach holds the EU's coveted Blue Flag for cleanliness, and is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many wonderful tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving centre, a children's play/activity centre with babysitting, pedalo rentals, a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, a hairdresser, a nail spa, a beauty spa, a games centre with pool tables and other games machines, and the Villa Crete Holidays for tourist information, private boat hire, boat trips, horse riding, water skiing, private sightseeing flights in a light aircraft, and organised walking and coach trips. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.

Any steps? How many?
Half a step from the parking into the ground floor accommodation, 2.5steps from the ground floor onto the pool terrace, 16 steps from the ground floor to the first floor.
Not essentially private because there are other houses on the land in front of the villa but these villas are very occasionally used holiday homes - the pool terrace and downstairs dining terrace cannot be seen by any other property. Only part of the upstairs terrace can be barely seen from a house set 100m away.
