Villa Rodi is a beautifully constructed villa set on 4 levels of a terraced hillside just above the pretty village of Gavalohori. The villa has outstanding views of Souda Bay, Aptera Fort, The Akrotiri Peninsula, the quaint village, acres of olive and conifer trees, and the spectacular White Mountains. This location is ideal for anyone who would like to be close to a traditional, rural village, yet only 5 minutes away by car from the beach. Smoking is not allowed inside the villa but as there are many balconies and terraces this should not be a problem.
The English owners have created an attractive escape which combines traditional Cretan features with modern comforts. The villa has been built using cypress wood for the high beamed ceiling, doors and shutters, and local stone for the garden walls and the fireplace. This stone is white in colour when it first comes out of the ground, and then turns to a darker colour, leading the locals to say that it “tans”. The furniture and décor are very tasteful, with all of the wooden furniture having been hand crafted locally to match the wooden doors and shutters. The lounge has a sumptuous blue corner couch which is very comfortable, and a high ceiling which gives a very light and airy feel to the living area. Every modern comfort for has been provided for at Villa Rodi, such as free WIFI internet access, TV, DVD and CD players, ceramic hob and built in oven, fridge, freezer, microwave oven, dishwasher, washing machine, BBQ, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms, kitchen and living room. The a/c units also double up as heaters, and there is central heating and a fireplace for the cooler nights early and late season. There is solar powered hot water with a back-up emersion heater, and a covered parking area set just off the track at the top of the property.
The clever design of the villa means that almost every room, and the pool terrace, enjoy the stunning views. The living area has prime position on the top floor of the villa, whilst the 3 bedrooms are on the ground floor, which keeps them cooler during the long hot summer months. The pool terrace can be reached via steps from 2 of the bedrooms, or via steps down the side of the villa from the top floor. The pool terrace has natural stone paving stones, sunbeds, umbrellas, and a bbq. Several conifer trees provide natural shade, and at the south corner of the pool terrace there is splash of colour from a “hottentot fig” creeping plant. There are more conifers at the side of the property, and a bank on the top terrace which is covered with mesembryanthemum, hibiscus plants, daisies, a conifer, and a pomegranate tree, after which the villa was named, as “rodi” means “pomegranate” in Greek.

Villa Location
Gavalohori is a very traditional village and it has great historical importance in this area. There are buildings still remaining from Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish eras, and artefacts have also been found in the area from Neolithic and Minoan Times. Many of these artefacts are now housed in the Historical and Folklore Museum which is located on one of the village’s narrow streets. On the outskirts of the village there is a lovely picnic area beneath a thicket of shady trees and next to some Venetian Wells. The village square is only a short walk from Villa Rodi, and is still very much the focal point of village life. The main kafenion/taverna is a beautifully renovated stone building which is run by the very friendly Monica Papatheofilo. The food and desserts here are delicious and the prices are low. Sitting under the kafenion’s shady mulberry trees and watching the world go by, is a favourite past time for both locals and visitors alike. On the opposite side of the square there is the Women’s Craft Co-operative which is trying to keep traditional handicrafts alive by making and selling products such as pottery and lace. In the village you can also find 3 more tavernas, 1 mini market, a café which has souvlaki, and a bakery. Villa Rodi is just 5 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, a scuba diving office, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, guided coach or walking tours, horse riding, and boat trips. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
