Water Sports & Activities

Being the largest, most diverse, and most southerly Greek island, Crete is able to provide a remarkable variety of holiday activities to suit all ages and interests. The island has such rich and varied terrain with miles of coastline, mountains, gorges, caves, plateaus and beaches, that it is ideal for everyone. Whether you prefer more to get out and about in nature, more sedate activities such as cooking, wine tasting, and leisurely sightseeing, or even extreme sports, Crete can offer you a multitude of unique experiences.

Off the south coast of Crete, the deep blue waters of the Libyan sea (which are less than 230 miles from the coast of Africa), are home to a variety of large fish such as tuna, swordfish, yellowtail amberjack, dorado, and barracuda. With global warming the sea has become warmer and as a result even more species of fish, including sailfish and marlin, have entered our waters.

Exciting big game fishing private charters with a very knowledgeable skipper are available to both experienced fishermen and beginners alike. For the best chance of success the boat usually goes out from Chora Sfakion harbour at either 06.00 - 09.00 or 18.00 - 21.00 and tuna is the most likely fish to be caught (on approximately 90 - 95% of the trips). Booking in advance is essential.

A very clean and never too crowded water park with a variety of pools, slides, a playground, mini soccer, mini-cars, Jacuzzis, cafes, bars and restaurants. The water park is at Varipetro, just outside Chania on the road to Omalos. To avoid the queue at the Limnoupolis Ticket office, you can buy tickets in advance at a reduced price from Villas Crete Holidays.

There are a wealth of scuba diving experiences to be had whilst vacationing on Crete. If you are a beginner we can arrange a “Discover Scuba” day for you or a complete course to obtain your PADI dive certificate. If you are experienced and already have your PADI certificate, there are a number of different dives that we can arrange for you including night dives, boat dives, wreck dives and cave dives.

A morning water skiing in Souda Bay is a joyful experience for everyone from beginners to the more advanced. Our experienced instructor can take from 1 to 6 persons out in his boat and he has a wide range of equipment available for use including twin skis, slalom ski, wakeboard, knee board, trick ski, and a small rubber boat that can be towed behind the main boat for children to have fun.

Watersports equipment can be rented from the sports station in Almyrida that is run by a French company who specialize in activity holidays. Windsurfers, 1 or 2 man kayaks, and Hobie Cat catamarans are all available on a first come first serve basis daily from 10.00 – 17.00. To avoid disappointment we recommend that you pre-book the equipment to avoid disappointment, particularly during high season. For a special day out, a large trimaran can be rented for the day (the rental price includes an instructor who will sail the boat, and a picnic lunch). Up to 5 people can go on this excursion plus the instructor.
