Enjoying a privileged and peaceful location in the heart of the countryside, at the end of a 300m track on the very edge of the small, quaint, and typically Cretan village of Paleloni, but only 1.8km from the 4 tavernas and 2 minimarkets in Kefalas, 6 minutes drive from a rocky cove with spectacular, crystal clear turquoise water, great snorkelling, and a lovely taverna nestled on the rocks, and is 15 minutes from the many amenities and soft golden sand, blue flag beaches in Almyrida.
From its truly wonderful spot on an elevated hillside 500m above sea level, the living room and 3 bedrooms, the private pool and the outside terraces all take in the quite exceptional and far-reaching views over the sparkling blue Aegean Sea, along the north coastline to Rethymnon, and inland to Mount Ida in the Psiloritis mountain range. The Buoys Villa is undoubtedly welcoming and stylish, cool and airy, and ideal for laid-back summer living. The tasteful design cleverly fuses traditional elements including stone archways and nooks, and beamed ceilings made from fragrant local cypress wood, with contemporary furnishings and every modern comfort including gleaming bathrooms, a fully fitted kitchen with a comprehensive inventory, air conditioning throughout, WIFI, a TV with an Amazon fire stick, a portable WIFI speaker, and the most sumptuous memory foam mattresses that we have come across. In addition, there are a myriad of delightful embellishments including ancient irons, a shepherd’s crook, a goat bell, turtle-shaped pot stands, a traditional wall hanging, and shells, sponges, and coral from the sea to name just a few.
The benevolent Cretan climate guarantees that, despite the charming interiors, our guests at The Buoys Villa spend most of their time relaxing outside, but with an array of furniture on the different terraces, you may find it difficult to decide where to sit. Perhaps it will be in the 2000m2+ enchanting garden and pool area, enjoying the peace and quiet and the breathtaking vista. Taking centre stage is the infinity edge swimming pool surrounded by non-slip natural stone paving and tiles, which is the place for family fun and cooling off, flanked by a dining area shaded by a pergola covered in delicate Wisteria, a summer kitchen with a traditional barbeque, and a private outside shower room. Alternatively, the spacious upstairs terrace with the best views of all and a comfortable couch, armchairs and coffee table could be your choice, particularly if you want to chill out with a good holiday read or have an early morning breakfast whilst watching the sun rise over the sea.
With the owners being professional gardeners, it is no surprise that for the different sections of the grounds, they have carefully selected a multitude of typically Mediterranean flora that will flourish in the long, hot summers. Growing up the exterior walls of The Buoys Villa are colourful and fragrant Cape Honeysuckle, climbing Roses, and Bougainvillaea. There are terracotta pots with geranium and succulents, well-tended gravel flowerbeds encircle the house and pool terrace and are planted with Lavender, Oleander, Pride of Madeira, Aloe Ferox, Aloe arborescens, Tulbaghia, Dasylirion, Gaura, Palms, Pomegranate and Bitter Orange trees among others. The north side and the rear of the plot have Almond bushes and are blessed with shade from Olive, Pine, and Cypress trees, whilst the lower level of the slope that drops away below the villa and pool terrace has been left natural with wildflowers and shrubs which are at their most vibrant in the Spring. The private parking area is set just outside the main garden gate and has a shaded area for 1 car and space for 2 further cars.
The Buoys Villa couldn’t be more perfect for anyone seeking quality accommodation, in a quiet Cretan hamlet where it is easy to leave behind the hustle and bustle of daily life, yet is well placed for a short drive to a choice of village tavernas for a delicious meal, and for exploring west Crete.
Villa Accommodation
Ground floor (1 step from the pool and dining terrace 18 steps from the top floor, 3 steps from the parking area: L-shaped living room, kitchen and dining area that are separated by stone archways, 1 double bedroom, 1 shower room, 1 utility cupboard. Adjacent to the pool terrace and outside dining area is a porch with 2 chairs and a storage seat/bench. The door opens to the L-shaped, open-plan living room/dining area which is furnished with a circular dining table and 6 chairs, a shelving unit, a wall mirror, a small iron table with a mosaic top and a lamp, a long side table, a couch with a footrest which converts into a sofa bed, a pouffe, a cabinet/entertainment unit with a 32” flat screen TV with an Amazon fire stick (you can download your apps here and watch programmes which you have an account for, and a DVD and CD player, a portable WIFI speaker, 4 armchairs, a couch which converts to a futon bed, and a large wood burning stove with a log basket and fire irons. There are 3 sets of double doors that open out onto the shaded sea view front terrace and pool terrace, 2 windows look out to the pool terrace and barbeque house, 1 window into the porch, and 2 further windows that look out to the porch and then on to the outside dining terrace.
The modern kitchen area has a cream worktop, pale wood effect fitted cabinets, a slimline dishwasher, a ceramic hob, a built-in oven, a microwave oven, a Bosch fridge/freezer, a double sink, a kettle, a 4-slice toaster, a tower steamer, an electric juicer, a window that looks out to the dining terrace, and a door that opens onto the rear terrace. A small hallway leads from the lounge the staircase, and the doors to the downstairs bedroom, the utility cupboard and the first shower room. The bedroom has a beige suedette fabric double bed frame and headboard, a memory foam mattress, 2 bedside cabinets with reading lamps with USB charging points, a wall mirror, a stool-style chair, a double wardrobe with drawers, a shelf and hanging space, and double doors to front, sea facing terrace. The shower room has a shower cubicle with sliding glass doors, a toilet, a washbasin with a cabinet below, a mirrored cabinet with lights and a shelf, and a frosted window. The utility cupboard is equipped with a washing machine, iron and ironing board, a Bosch cordless vacuum cleaner and other cleaning items.
Top floor (18 steps up from the ground floor): a landing, 2 double bedrooms, 1 ensuite shower room, 1 full bathroom, and 1 large outside terrace. The landing is furnished with a chest of drawers and has doors to 2 bedrooms, the full bathroom and the upstairs terrace. The upstairs terrace is semi-shaded with a pergola covered in sail material. It is furnished with a couch and armchairs with grey cushions, a coffee table and a storage chest. There are views over the pool terrace and the surrounding countryside to the sea. The master bedroom suite has a deep teal/blue fabric king-size bed frame and headboard, a memory foam mattress, 2 bedside cabinets with reading lamps, a wall mirror, a double wardrobe with drawers, a shelf and hanging space, and double doors to the upstairs terrace. The ensuite shower room has a shower cubicle with sliding glass doors, a toilet, a washbasin with a cabinet below, a mirrored cabinet with lights and a shelf, and a window. The 2nd upstairs bedroom has a beige fabric king-size bedframe and headboard, a memory foam mattress, 2 bedside cabinets with reading lamps with USB charging points, a wall mirror, a stool-style chair, a double wardrobe with drawers, a shelf and hanging space, a sea view window, and double doors to the upstairs terrace. The main bathroom has a bath with a shower attachment and a glass screen door, a toilet, a washbasin with a cabinet underneath, a mirrored cabinet with a light, and laundry basket and a window.
Villa Location
Paleloni is an unspoilt village that is named after the old stone threshing circle that was previously used by farmers to thresh wheat and corn using donkeys. The main route through the village is lined with tall eucalyptus trees. The village centre has a kafenion and some traditional houses, whilst some fine newer properties (including The Buoys Villa) are scattered on the edges of Paleloni. Despite being 500m above sea level, Paleloni is a mere 6 minutes by car to the gorgeous rocky cove at Ombrosgialos, which is famous for its clear turquoise water, great snorkelling, and lovely taverna nestled on the rocks.
Paleloni effectively adjoins the community of Kefalas which is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in the region, thanks in part to the narrow and winding bougainvillea-lined streets, and the ruin of an ancient windmill on the outskirts. The village has 4 tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, and 4 kafenions. There are eight churches in Kefalas, some of which are historic, and the villagers celebrate with a feast day on August the 15th. The 2 tavernas in the hamlet of Drapanos are 2.2kms from the villa and the ever-popular village of Almyrida, which is built around a crescent-shaped sandy beach, is only 7kms away. This beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also, in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers, catamarans, pedaloes, and paddle boards. We at Villas Crete Holidays will give you the contact details for many activity providers including those for private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, guided walking, and guided coach excursions. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic Venetian towns of Chania and Rethymnon are 50 minutes or so away by car.

*** As of January 01, 2024, the Greek government have replaced the old “bed tax” with a new tax that is applied to all stays in short-term rental accommodation in Greece. The Climate Resilience Levy is a response to the devastating forest fires and floods that Greece has experienced in recent years, with the government hoping to generate extra funding that will go towards financing reconstruction, supporting victims, and increasing the country’s defences against future natural disasters.
The owners of all short-term rental accommodation are legally obliged to collect the Climate Resilience Levy as a separate tax for all overnight stays (per villa) as follows:
In 2025: €15.00 per night on stays between March 01 and October 31, and €4.00 per night on stays between November 01 and February 28/29.
We will collect the Climate Levy with your final balance payment and it will be clearly itemised on your Booking Confirmation.
Whilst we understand the potential budget concerns of our guests, this tax/levy is beyond our control and we encourage our guests to see this as a way of contributing to the protection of the planet and the beautiful area where they are holidaying.
